Pheromone portraits, 2001

Portraits of Ada Lovelace, Kafka and Leibniz

These portraits inaugurate a new way of generating images. Rather than being directly drawn or computed, the figures emerge from the dynamics of artificial pheromone peaks produced by the ant algorithm. The process possesses a kind of memory, since each trace depends on those that precede it. Each portrait is therefore less a representation than the visible trace of an autonomous process of emergence.
The image results from a process of self-organization. Each portrait thus constitutes a singular interpretation of the initial image, produced by a non-human logic.
