Swarm sculptures, 2000

The Swarm Sculptures are based on Marco Dorigo’s ant algorithm. One immediate application of the algorithm was the generation of drawings and paintings, but since the virtual ants move through a toroidal space, it was also possible to inscribe their behaviour onto a 3D sphere, where peaks correspond to higher concentrations of artificial pheromones.
The output of these experiments was a series of 3D models, which I translated into Plexiglas, 3D prints and, in some cases, bronze casts. These sculptures materialize an otherwise invisible process of self-organization: the solidified traces of emergent behaviour, giving physical presence to an artificial swarm.
