Alive! at "FASTFORWARD ON NEW MEDIA ART: ROBOTS", Palazzo delle Arti Napoli, Italy
Robots are more than simple machines to help or entertain us. Robots are a new kind of life that is here to stay, evolve and challenge humanity in multiple fashions. They may seem primitive and clumsy, but that is normal if we consider that their process of evolution just started. Actually that process can be compared to the Cambrian explosion when Earth was 'suddenly' occupied by bizarre life forms, most with strange shapes and feeble sustainability, but that drove the course of evolution. Robots are not far from that, rehearsing the first attempts to its existence.
Currently, we are the solely agents of that evolutionary course. But soon robots will be able to acquire their own freewill and be detached from us. We shouldn’t fear that moment. On the contrary, the emergence of a new kind of life form, as much or more intelligent than humans will boost our own evolutionary process and help to expand the available intelligence in the planet.
Alive! installation depict robots as that new kind of life. It is still here an essential electrical and electronic based life, but that questions our place in the Whole as well as some common notions as intelligence, culture and in the present context art.
